Uterine Artery Embolization

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

Uterine fibroids are non cancerous tumors that occur in about half of all women. They can become symptomatic with heavy, painful, and irregular menses. Traditional treatment for these tumors consist of
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. More severe symptoms are treated with hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or myomectomy (removal of the tumor itself).

An additional alternative is also available. It is called UAE, or Uterine Artery Embolization. UAE involves an incision, by a radiologist, in the groin under local anesthesia. A catheter is then inserted into the arteries

that supply blood flow to the uterus. A clot forming agent is then inserted that cuts off the blood supply to the uterus. The catheter is then removed and the incision is covered with a band-aid. The resultsing decrease in blood flow to the uterus reduces the symptoms associated with the uterine fibroids.

UAE is not without risks. At least 4 of the 40,000 patients receiving the procedure have died from complications. 20% of patients had little or no relief with UAE and required further surgical treatment. This percentage may increase with time as no long term studies have been performed with this procedure. UAE is also no a option in women who desire future fertility. Prior to UAE, a gynecologist should be consulted to determine if UAE is appropriate.

It is important to consult your physician at The Woman's Wellness Center, P.C. in order to accurately diagnose your situation and give you accurate treatment.
