Infertility

Infertility occurs when a couple does not achieve pregnancy within 12 months with well-timed intercourse. This happens to approximately 15% of couples trying to become pregnant. There are multiple steps in the evaluation of infertility.

  • Male factor - About 1/3 of infertility is related to an abnormality with semen which contains the sperm. A semen analysis is usually ordered early in the work-up of infertility. If an abnormality in the number, appearance, or action of the sperm is detected, the next step may be referral to a urologist for the male partner or using special techniques to optimize the sperm that are present.
    • Ovulation - Your gynecologist at The Womans Wellness Center will check that you are ovulating. This can sometimes be determined just by talking to you about your menstrual cycles, or using daily temperature charting, or possibly some lab work.
    • Hysterosalpingogram or Laparoscopic Procedure - In addition, we would want to make sure that your fallopian tubes are open. This can be evaluated laparoscopically (using a camera through the belly button) or with a hysterosalpingogram (a special x-ray that is taken after dye has been injected into the uterus).
    • Based on the findings of your particular situation, you may be a candidate for other tests or certain medications to improve ovulation or even surgery. Dealing with infertility is a stressful time for many couples. At The Womans Wellness Center, we would like to make the process easier. Contact one of our physicians today!
