Pain Relief During Labor
(continued)

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

The most common anesthesia for cesarean births are regional blocks. Spinal anesthesia is a type of regional block which involves a much thinner needle that an epidural block. As such, a much smaller dose of anesthetic is needed for a spinal block. Spinal anesthesia also has more rapid onset. However, with spinal anesthesia, additional doses cannot be administered as easily.

  • General anesthesia: is sometimes used for cesarean sections. This involves the delivering mother being put to sleep and establishing an
  •          airway to assist with breathing. This is most          commonly used when a rapid delivery is needed,          such as an emergency cesarean section for fetal          or maternal problems. It is not widely used, as the          medication and anesthesia may affect the baby.
