Emotions & Health

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

Several standardized tests are available to measure emotional well being. The most common is a 30 item questionnaire. Results from studies using these test have shown that people who score well on these tests (have an optimistic outlook on life) cope better and have healthier habits. It is also now thought that optimistic people live longer.

A recent study followed 1000 people and categorized them according to their level of optimism. The most optimistic group had 55% lower risk of death overall as compared with the most pessimistic group. The optimists also had a 23% decreased risk of stroke and heart disease. The exact mechanism behind these results is not clear but it may be related to the healthier habits or more upbeat people.
