Condoms

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

Condoms are the only method of birth control that can prevent sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, which causes AIDS. However, when using condoms, consider the following:

  • Use only water based lubricants, such as K-Y Jelly, oil based lubricant such as petroleum jelly, or baby oil may weaken the latex.

  • Store condoms in a cool, dry place.

  • Never reuse a condom.
    • Do not buy condoms past their expiration date.
    • Follow the package instructions.
    • Open the condom package with care. Never use scissors, a knife, or your teeth.
    • If an allergy to latex exists, buy condoms from a synthetic material such as polyurethane. Lambskin is not effective.
