Disorders of the Cervix

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

The cervix is the lower narrow end of the uterus that opens into the vagina. Several conditions can effect the cervix. The following disorders are the majority of the non cancerous conditions.

      Cervicitis

Cervicitis may also be caused by irritation from a foreign body such as:

  • Forgotten tampon
  • Vaginal pessary (Pessary - 1: a vaginal suppository
2 : a device worn in the vagina to support the uterus, remedy a malposition, or prevent conception)

Signs of cervicitis include a vaginal discharge, vaginal odor, and pelvic discomfort.

Polyps

Polyps are non cancerous growth that often appear on the cervix. They vary in size and may cause vaginal bleeding. They often may be removed in the office. Polyps are usually found during a pelvic exam.

Genital Warts

Genital Warts, often called condyloma, are growths that are caused by some types of the human pappilomavirus (HPV). The virus is most often passed through sexual relations. Some types are associated with cervical cancer. Women who have genital warts should have regular pap tests that include typing for the cancer lined strains of HPV.
