Staying healthy is important. You should have a routine GYN exam every year if you are sexually active or over the age of 18. You are developing into a young women and whether you are sexually active or not, good feminine health is necessary for your best quality of life. What you do know effects your future.


The exam allows your health care provider to access normal development of your reproductive organs and screen for certain health problems. Your health care provider may also check your thyroid, heart, lung and breast health. If you're not sure how to perform a self breast exam, this is the best time to ask your provider to teach you.


Good gynecological care is essential for taking control of your sexual and reproductive health. Get to know your body! Learn what is normal for your body and what is not. Watch for changes in your body and its rhythms that may signal problems. The more you know about your body, the better chance you have to be and stay healthy.


You may need to see your healthcare provider more than once a year if:
  • You have a history of abnormal pap smears
  • You have a sexually related illness
  • You have an STD or a partner with an STD
  • You have a breast lump
  • Your mother or sister developed breast cancer before     menopause
  • You plan on becoming pregnant
  • Regardless of your age, you need to see your healthcare provider if you have:
  • growth or thickening of the breast or armpit
  • unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • unusual or severe vaginal or pelvic pain
  • pain, swelling, tenderness of the vagina or vulva
  • itching, sores, or lumps of the vagina or vulva
  • been a victim of a sexual assault (rape)
  • You will want to schedule your exam for a time that is convenient for you. The Woman's Wellness Center, P.C. offers early morning and evening appointments for patients who are unable to make it during the day. Make sure that you do not schedule your appointment during your menstrual cycle. Menstrual fluids can affect the results of some lab tests. If you made an appointment that is during your period, you will need to reschedule your appointment.
