   Dietary Fiber & Breast Cancer

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

Women of Latina descent have significantly lower breast cancer rates than non Hispanic women. Researchers now believe that this may be due to the higher fiber content in traditional Latin American foods like beans and corn. Fiber lowers estrogen levels in the blood. Many of the known risk factors for breast cancer are:

  • Alcohol
  • Obesity
  • Postmenopausal hormones

These factors increase the level of estrogen in the blood. A recent study confirmed that as the level of fiber increased the estrogen level in the blood decreased. A high fiber diet is thought to be beneficial in the lowering of risk of colon cancer as well.
