  Long Lasting Contraception -
The Facts on Depo Provera

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

Depo Provera is an injectable form contraception. It is injected into the hip area every 3 months. Depo Provera is highly effective. The initial injection is given within the first 5 days of the menstrual cycle, and then every 3 months.

Side effects of Depo Provera are irregular menstrual bleeding, breast tenderness, weight gain and depression. The incidence of irregular bleeding is 1 in 3 women in the first year, then 1 in 10 women thereafter. Most women have no cycles after prolonged use. Weight gain and depression are present in less than 1 in 20 women.

The advantages of Depo Provera are that there is no need to take daily pills. Since Depo Provera contains no estrogen, women who are at risk for blood clots may take Depo Provera safely. It may also be given after a vaginal delivery or a cesarean section, even if breastfeeding.

Other benefits include decreased risk of endometrial cancer, decreased menstrual blood flow, improvement in endometriosis symptoms and fewer ectopic pregnancies.

Depo Provera is an extremely safe and effective method of contraception particularly in smokers over the age of 35 years, breastfeeding, and women who have compliance problems such as adolescents, mentally retarded women, and women with psychiatric disorders.
