Lactational Amenorrhea

Written by: Sharon Ransom, MD

If you have concerns about contraception and are currently breastfeeding ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Have menses returned?
  2. Are you exclusively breastfeeding?
  3. Is your baby under six months old?

If you answered “yes” to all three questions there is only a 1% or 2% chance of pregnancy. If you were unable to answer “yes” to all three questions, then you must seek medical advice on a complimentary birth control method.
