  Pregnancy & Round Ligament Pain

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

The round ligament is a suspansory ligament of the uterus. It connects the uterus to your pelvic bones. It is helpful to think of the round ligament in terms of a rope. When this ligament (rope) stretches, such as when the baby moves or with prolonged standing, there is pain. This pain occurs in the lower section of the abdomen and can occur on either or both sides. Treatment involves change of position or patience. Prolonged pain may be treated with Tylenol or pregnancy support belt.

Round Ligament pain poses no threat to the baby and does not increase your likelihood of preterm labor. It is important to note that round ligament pain is constant as compared to labor pain which is

intermittent. Please contact your physician at The Woman's Wellness Center, P.C. if you suspect labor pains or if you would like more information regarding ligament pain.
