Postpartum Depression

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

Depression after childbirth occurs in 8% - 10% of all women. Women at significant risk include those that have a personal or family history of depression, and those that have significant adjustment problems with childbirth. Depression is less likely to occur in women with planned pregnancies in secure environment. It is also less likely in women who have a supportive relationship and manageable levels of life stress.

Treatment should be individualized, but usually involves a combination of medication, counseling, and reassurance. Close contact and support from medical staff and family members are very important.

The diagnosis of postpartum depression includes the following:

  • Depressed mood

  • Diminished interest in daily activities

  • Weight loss or gain

  • Insomnia or excessive sleeping

  • Inability to concentrate

  • Fatigue

  • Feelings of guilt

  • Slowed movement

  • Recurrent thoughts of death

If you believe that you are suffering from postpartum depression, please contact your physician at The Womans Wellness Center, P.C. If you know someone who may be suffering from postpartum depression, be supportive and encourage them to see their Dr. as soon as possible.
