Vaginal Discharge

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

Dear Dr. Zuniga,

What are the most common causes of vaginal discharge?

Vaginal discharge can be associated with a variety of causes. The most common is bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is caused by the overgrowth of normal bacteria that commonly are present in the vagina. The discharge in bacterial

vaginosis is commonly malodorous with a sometimes fishy odor. It is usually treated with pills or cream.

Vaginal yeast is also very common. It is usually associated with a cottage cheese like discharge and vaginal itching. Treatment commonly involves vaginal creams. Optional treatments include an anti-yeast pill given as a one time dose.

Trichomoniasis is associated with a greenish abundant discharge. Treatment is a 5 to 7 day course of oral antibiotics.

In post menopausal women atrophic vaginitis may cause vaginal discharge. This is due to the lack of estrogen. Treatments include oral or vaginal estrogens.

It is important to consult your physician at The Woman's Wellness Center, P.C. to accurately diagnose and treat vaginal discharge.
