Colon Cancer

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

Dear Dr. Zuniga,

I am currently 50 years old and concerned about my risk for colon cancer. Is there any diet or screening that I should consider?

Colon Cancer is the third most common cancer in women behind breast and lung cancer. Screening tests for colon cancer include yearly stool samples for occult blood (Guaiac Test). This should begin at age 50.

Also at age 50, a Sigmoidoscopy should be performed. This is to be repeated every 3 to 5 years.

Modifications of lifestyle and dietary factors can help to reduce the risk of colon cancer. Daily fat intake should be limited to 20% of calories, along with increased consumption of wheat bran - type fiber. A regular intake of fresh fruits and vegetables is also necessary. This should be accompanied by a regular daily exercise program. As with any diet and exercise program, first consult your physician.
