Bleeding After One Year of No Periods

Dear Dr. Kanuru,

I am 48 years old. Is bleeding after one year of my last period a concern?

Absence of a period for one year indicates that one is going through menopause. Post menopause bleeding could be due to endometrial hyperplasia. Transvaginal ultrasonography is used to measure endometrial thickness. Endometrial

thickness more than 4mm needs to be evaluated by an endometrial biopsy. Observation alone is not an acceptable alternative except in short term.

Any further questions regarding Menstrual Disorders & Menopause should be discussed with your physician at The Woman's Wellness Center, P.C.
