Cranberry Juice & Bladder Infections

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

Dear Dr. Zuniga,

Does cranberry juice prevent bladder infections?

Many women drink cranberry juice with the belief that it prevents bladder infections. In test tube experiments the substances responsible for the red color in cranberry juice prevents bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall. If the bacteria do not attach, a

bladder infection does not occur. This was confirmed in a recent clinical trial, which examined women who drank three glasses of cranberry juice per day. These women had, on average, one less bladder infection per year. It is unknown if less than three glasses per day is also effective. Cranberry juice is very high in calories. If calories are a concern, the study also found that cranberry juice extract pills were also effective and much cheaper.
