Prolonged use of Ibuprofen

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

Dear Dr. Zuniga,

I have been taking Ibuprofen for heavy menses and cramping. Could it be harmful to take this medication for a prolonged period?

Ibuprofen is the generic ingredient in products such as Motrin and Advil. This medication is classified as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

As with most medications, the higher the dose of Ibuprofen, the more likely

you are to have side effects. Ibuprofen tends to irritate the lining of the stomach, so the most likely effect is an upset stomach. You may experience a burning pain in the upper part of your abdomen, mild nausea, or loss of appetite. Taking Ibuprofen at mealtimes and using antacids is one way to prevent these problems.

Uncommon side effects could include stomach ulcers, blood pressure changes, rashes, and worsening of asthma. Any of these side effects should lead to discontinuation of the medication and notification of your health provider.
