Exercises & Activities to Avoid
During Pregnancy

Written by: Henry Zuniga, MD

Dear Dr. Zuniga,

What exercises and activities should be avoided during pregnancy?

Because of increasing weight and changes in ligaments, pregnant women are more prone to sprains and ligament injury. Therefore they should avoid exercise that involves a lot of jumping or bouncing. This would include high-impact aerobics.

Pregnant women also experience a shift in their center of gravity which makes balance difficult. Because of this they should avoid snow and water skiing along with horseback riding. These activities greatly increase the risk of trauma to the abdominal area.

Scuba diving is also discouraged in pregnancy due to pressure changes and the unknown effects of breathing a compressed air mixture may have on the fetus.

Any further questions regarding exercises and activity during pregnancy, contact your healthcare provider at The Womans Wellness Center, P.C.
